Design, supply & installation of a multi storey external steel spiral staircase, an internal single steel spiral staircase & mesh panel infills to an existing staircase balustrade
Project Overview
Birmingham Fabrications were appointed as the main metal work contractor within a residential redevelopment. The project consisted of three elements: a new steel fire escape spiral staircase, an internal spiral staircase and internal infills to an exsisting listed steel staircase balustrade.
The main building contractor wanted us to offer a solution to the metal work requirements within their multi million pound residential redevelopment in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. With just the original architect designs and a free site survey, we were able to agree an order without hassle.
First part of the project was the large external fire escape spiral staircase. After agreeing designs, our team of fabricators in Birmingham started production on the steel staircase in our workshop. After components had been fabricated and welded, our team erected the spiral staircase at our premises to ensure a straightforward installation before dismantling, galvanising and transporting to site.
Once the steel components had arrived to site, we arranged for a spider-crane to navigate the 10+ meter centre pole through the tight courtyard and lift into position. Treads were then positioned over the fixed centre pole – creating the spiral effect. Once the checker plate treads were in position, our team of onsite fabricators began bolting the steel tube balustrade in sections and fully welding connections.
The much smaller internal spiral staircase followed the same manufacturing and installation process as the external fire escape staircase but was manually manoeuvred and finished with a black powder coat.
The steel balustrade to the existing internal staircase did not meet current UK building regulations but was protected / listed. Therefore we were trusted to offer a solution to fabricate infill panels that could be fixed without making any permanent alterations to the existing metal balustrade. The infill panels our Birmingham welders produced were made from mesh sheets and channel edging – all powder coated black for a perfect finish.
