Supply & Installation of Stainless Steel and Glass Balustrade for City Library Staircase

Project Overview

Coventry City Library – Replace existing balustrade with new stainless steel and glass balustrade

Remove outdated and worn existing staircase steel balustrade and glass – dispose of materials. Design, fabricate and install new stainless-steel balustrade complete with clear toughened glass infills.

Our task for this project was to update the main staircase balustrade for the Coventry City Library. The existing plastic covered steel balustrade with glass infills was outdated and worn. Working closely with the appointed contractor we agreed to replace the existing with stainless steel and glass balustrade.

Working with our structural engineer we produced a design that included 48mm stainless steel top rail and posts, 10mm toughened glass, feature fittings and wall mounted stainless steel rail to match.

Once designs were approved and structural calculations passed, we were able to begin fabrication of the new bespoke stainless-steel balustrade in our Birmingham based workshop. Working in the hours the library was closed to avoid any disruption to public, we begun to dismantle the existing balustrade piece by piece – disposing of all waste ourselves. After the area was cleared by our operatives, we started to install the bespoke 48mm diameter stainless steel posts by resin fixing to precast concrete stairs. Top rail with feature fittings were then TIG welded at every joint on site. Once the stainless-steel frame was secured and polished, made to measure toughened glass was installed.
